Protecting drinking water and environmental integrity

This August, Maryland’s temporary ban on high risk drilling will expire, making our State and its five gas basins a target for gas companies who seek to extract layers of shale from underground. Studies have shown that fracking can cause widespread harm including contaminated water and air pollution from the release of toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and radioactive materials that collect in the earth.

Jon hopes to leave Maryland’s environment in better shape for future generations than it is today. He supported Governor O’Malley’s Marcellus Shale Safe Drilling Act that banned fracking for three years so that studies could be done on the safety and environmental impact. Jon also supported a bill that gives citizens standing in court to challenge permit decisions that affect the environment, natural resources, and critical land areas. Jon strongly supports renewable energy and has voted for off shore wind farms to supply Marylanders with the energy they need.
