Bio

 Delegate Jon Steven Cardin

Jon Steven Cardin recently completed the first year of his second term representing the 11th District of Northwest Baltimore County in the Maryland House of Delegates.  2007 was Delegate Cardin’s first year as Chairman of the Election Law subcommittee of the Ways and Means Committee.  Ways and Means hears testimony on bills concerning gaming, taxes, children & youth, education, and election reform.  Jon previously served on the Tax & Revenue and Education subcommittees. 

Delegate Cardin was appointed to represent the House of Delegates on several task forces, including the Task Force to Study Elderly and Retiree Migration Into and Out of Maryland, the Task Force on Comparable Testing Methods for the Maryland High School Assessments, and the Task Force to Implement Holocaust, Genocide, Human Rights and Tolerance Education.  He also served on the Special Committee on Higher Education Affordability and Accessibility.

When the House of Delegates is not in session, Delegate Cardin practices law at Cardin & Gitomer, P.A. in Baltimore.  Delegate Cardin also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Baltimore Shakespeare Festival, the Camp Shohola Scholarship Fund, Baltimore Hebrew University, and the Maryland Public Interest Law Project.

Delegate Cardin received a Juris Doctor with Honors from the University of Maryland School of Law in 2001.  During law school, Delegate Cardin participated in many activities and competitions, including the International Environmental Moot Court Competition, Phi Delta Phi Legal Honors Fraternity, and the Maryland Public Interest Law Project.  While in school, Delegate Cardin clerked for the Baltimore City Office of the Public Defender and the Law Offices of Peter G. Angelos.  Upon graduation from law school, Delegate Cardin worked as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable William D. Quarles in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City, and had the unique opportunity to assist the honorable judge during his successful confirmation process to sit on the United States Federal Bench for the District of Maryland. 

Delegate Cardin received his Masters degree in Policy Science from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and his Masters degree in Judaic Studies from Baltimore Hebrew University (BHU), both in 1996, where he successfully completed the dual masters requirements at the Darrell Friedman Institute. 

Delegate Cardin obtained his Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Tufts University, Medford MA in 1992.  At Tufts, Delegate Cardin played Lacrosse, captained the Ski Team, and was a Board member of Tufts Hillel.  During college, Delegate Cardin additionally spent six months studying at Universidad de Madrid, Complutense in Madrid, Spain and took graduate courses in Archaeology in Ashkelon, Israel through a Harvard Summer School program.  

Delegate Cardin is a 1988 alumnus of The Park School of Baltimore where he was student council President, student representative to the Board of Directors, captain of the basketball team, and varsity letter winner in lacrosse and soccer.

From 1996-1998, Delegate Cardin served as the Executive Director of the Project Judaica Foundation, a non-profit designed to promote, exhibit and rehabilitate Eastern European culture and educate on the Holocaust.  In this role, Delegate Cardin oversaw all the foundation’s programs and grants, and coordinated the foundation’s in-depth seminars on Democracy and the American legislative process.  Delegate Cardin additionally taught Spanish and coached basketball and lacrosse at The Mercersburg Academy from 1992-1994. 

In 1990 Jon began his continuing amateur career in triathlons, marathons, and adventure races.

When Delegate Cardin was first elected in 2002, he was a third generation ‘Cardin’, succeeding his Uncle Ben, Great Uncle Maurice, and Grandfather, the Honorable Judge Meyer Cardin, to represent the greater Baltimore region.
